Hyde Technology College, Greater Manchester

Carillion Plc appointed Soil Engineering’s Ground Engineering Services to stabilise unrecorded shallow mine-workings within the Oldham Great and Foggs Coal Seams prior to the construction of two new schools.

The work was to be carried out in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester on a single site prior to the construction of a new Technology College and Primary School complex.

The works, (which were designed in-house), were undertaken in two visits within the site of the existing Hyde Technology College and included:

  • Forming over 300 No. treatment holes
  • Drilling to depths of over 40m
  • Over 10,000 linear metres of drilling
  • The Injection of cementitious grout

The works were carried out utilising 3 Boart Longyear rotary percussive rigs and a bespoke grout mixing plant owned and operated by Soil Engineering.

Gas monitoring was undertaken throughout the works in specially constructed monitoring standpipes to determine the risk to adjacent properties of hazardous gas migration during the works.

The site was managed and completed on time by a team of 14 direct employees of Soil Engineering Ground Engineering Services.
