A1 Morpeth to Felton Dualling
Client: Laing O’Rourke
Engineer: White Young Green
Contract Value: £350,000
Ground investigation contract for A1 Morpeth to Felton dualling scheme.
The scheme involved the upgrading of approximately 12.4km of the existing A1 trunk road in Northumberland to dual carriageway.
The ground investigation was completed on behalf of Laing O’Rourke under the supervision of White Young Green. It comprised a series of boreholes, both cable tool and rotary, installation of groundwater monitoring instrumentation, window samples, insitu testing and contamination testing.
Within the 6 week site period a total of 53 boreholes were constructed of which 24 were cable tool, 11
rotary cored and 18 cable tool with rotary follow on. Also required were a series of concrete cored holes into an existing culvert structure to obtain information on the quality and thickness of the concrete.
A number of the exploratory hole positions required traffic management and were within difficult access areas. On occasions a mini digger was craned over the crash barrier to create benching for the rig to sit on and then craned out.
Soil Engineering are also required to monitor each of the installations at intervals in accordance with the Engineers instructions.
