Laboratory

Soil Engineering’s Geotechnical Laboratory is equipped to carry out a wide range of tests as specified in BS 1377:1990 Methods of Tests for Civil Engineering Purposes.

The laboratory is currently in the process of increasing accreditation to undertake testing to the new standard BS EN ISO 17892. The laboratory can carry out a range of  ISRM rock tests including Slake Durability, Brazil Tensile Strength, and Unconfined Compressive Strength with Youngs’ Modulus and Poisson’s Ratio. Our technicians are also able to offer in-situ testing across the UK.

Digital Data (AGS)

Utilising a digital management system, we are able to accept test scheduling in AGS format, whilst offering reporting in both AGS4 and PDF formats (producing BIM compliant data).

The laboratory has bespoke automatic data logging systems which capture one dimensional consolidation test, triaxial compression test and shear box test data, and continues to digitise testing throughout our suite of accredited processes.

Soil Engineering accepts soil, rock and aggregate samples from both internal operations & projects and external clients. We routinely test material from throughout the British Isles and from an expanding international client base.

Accreditation

The Soil Engineering laboratory achieved initial UKAS certification in 1993. In subsequent years the range of accredited testing has progressively increased. This, coupled with regular internal auditing, ensures a consistently high quality service.

The soil and rock laboratory at Soil Engineering is one of the largest in the UK, both in terms of number of samples it can process and also in terms of the scope of testing offered:

  • Soil Testing
  • Rock Testing
  • Aggregate Testing
  • Sample Description & Photography
  • Advice on Testing (including workshops)
  • Digital reports in PDF Format
  • Reports in AGS Format
  • In Situ Testing Services:
  • Plate Load Tests
  • California Bearing Ratio
  • In Situ Density
  • Soakaway Testing
  • Borehole Permeability Testing

Facilities

Our temperature controlled testing facilities are augmented by storage for over 80,000 soil samples (including 10,000 undisturbed soil samples), managed with digital chain of custody processes. The purpose built Core Store and Logging Facility is capable of holding 5,500m of core in a temperature controlled environment. It provides controlled lighting and working space for the preparation and photography of samples, and capacity for our Staff and Clients to examine samples in a safe environment. We regularly host visits from both Clients and Academia, as we share our knowledge and experience.
