Over Water
Soil Engineering’s Leeds Laboratory is a UK-leading analytical facility
Our Geotechnical Laboratory is equipped to carry out a wide range of tests as specified in BS 1377:1990 Methods of Tests for Civil Engineering Purposes. In addition the laboratory is currently in the process of being accredited to undertake testing to the new standard BS EN ISO 17892. The laboratory also carries out ISRM rock tests including slake durability, Brazil tensile strength, and Unconfined Compressive Strength with Youngs’ Modulus and Poisson’s Ratio. Our technicians are also able to offer in-situ testing across the UK.
Data Generation and Management
We accept test scheduling in AGS format, using our digital lab management system. This supports reporting in both AGS4 and PDF formats (producing BIM compliant data), generally the core requirement of a quality project.
The laboratory has bespoke automatic data logging systems which capture one dimensional consolidation test, triaxial compression test and shear box test data, and continues to digitise testing throughout our suite of accredited processes.
Our geotechnical laboratory accepts soil, rock and aggregate samples from a wide range of sources. We manage materials from internal projects and external clients, throughout the British Isles and across an international client base. Besides In-house testing, our capability is supported by specialist subcontractors for geochemical analysis.
The Soil Engineering laboratory achieved initial UKAS certification in 1993 and extended the scope of certification in 1994 to include in situ testing. In subsequent years the range of accredited testing has progressively increased.
Testing Scope
The soil and rock laboratory of Soil Engineering is one of the largest in the UK, both in terms of number of samples it can process and also in terms of the scope of testing offered:
- Soil Testing
- Rock Testing
- Aggregate Testing
- Sample Description & Photography
- Advice on Testing (including workshops)
- Digital reports in PDF Format
- Reports in AGS Format
- In Situ Testing Services:
- Plate Load Tests
- California Bearing Ratio
- In Situ Density
- Soakaway Testing
- Borehole Permeability Testing

UKAS Testing Laboratory No. 1265, accredited to BS EN ISO 17025:2017
Furthermore, the Soil Engineering Geoservices Limited Laboratory accreditation is supported by regular internal auditing, ensuring a consistently high quality service.
Stored Safe, Secure and Accessible
We augment our temperature controlled testing facilities with storage for over 80,000 soil samples. This includes 10,000 undisturbed soil samples, and is managed with digital chain of custody processes. We can hold over 5km of core within Our purpose built Core Store and Logging Facility. This provides a temperature and light controlled environment for the preparation and photography of samples. At the same time the lab facility supports capacity for our Engineers and Clients to examine samples in a safe and practical environment. We have invested in materials handling systems and workspaces ensuring that any sample can be made accessible for any analyst.
