On Land

Over Water
We were founded on the belief that high-quality Ground Investigation data is the key to mitigating ground risk and enhancing design.
Over 50 years later, we pride ourselves in the range of techniques we offer, and the quality of the workmanship and data produced by our talented teams across the country. Providing national coverage from our offices in Leeds, Coatbridge and Camberley, our regional teams provide local expertise for bespoke solutions.
Soil Engineering provide a wide range of ground investigation techniques, primarily using our comprehensive in-house drilling fleet, backed up by the production of digital data for BIM compatibility. These include:
- Cable Percussive Drilling (Up to 300mm diameter, and 100m depth)
- Rotary Core Drilling (Up to 180mm diameter and 250m depth)
- Openhole Drilling (Up to 300mm Diameter and 300m depth)
- Dynamic Sampling (up to 15m depth)
- Sonic Drilling (Up to 150mm diameter and 50m depth)
- Dynamic Probing (Up to 15m depth)
- Trial Pitting and Excavation (Up to 15m depth)
- Structural Coring (Up to 20m depth)
Significantly, our intrusive techniques are supported by insitu and offsite testing provided by our UKAS accredited Laboratory. Likewise, this is supported by our Project Managers and Geologists producing high quality logs and records for your designers. Within the operations team, BDA Audited and NVQ Qualified Drilling Crews operate to the highest standards. All of our operations and planning are supported by our In-House Health and Safety Department.
Ground Investigation Delivered From Experience
Our Ground Investigation teams have undertaken some of Britain’s most significant projects in the last 10 years, being involved in key sections of HS2, Tideway Tunnel, Lee Tunnel, The A9 Dualling, and the A82. We’ve undertaken some of the UK’s most complex and sensitive ground investigations, supporting the highways, utilities and nuclear sectors. While delivering these projects, we have pioneered the provision of digital Ground Investigation data direct from site in AGS4 format using Keylogbook (now standard across all our field operations), and Drilling Parameter Recording, which is available across the majority of our Rotary Drilling fleet.
Our impressive in-house field capability is augmented by trusted specialist subcontractors, and supported by our dedicated Data Management team, who undertake rigorous checks on all data produced by our investigation teams. As our Managers have all previously undertaken many years of Ground Investigation Management, at all levels, they provide a vital resource to our clients. Therefore, when combined with their extensive safety and quality management training, we offer a reliable, technically advanced, and project optimised service.
Supporting Site Investigation
Utilising our expertise in ground investigation, coupled with our technical staff’s years of training, and our extensive past projects archive, we can also provide site investigation services across the country. A broader scope than pure ground investigation, our site investigations can include:
- desk study reviews of geological and geoenvironmental data,
- Map and document reviews for historic use
- Multiple phases of intrusive and non-intrusive surveys
- Project-specific monitoring regimes.
These site investigations can be undertaken in partnership with your own consultants, architects and designers, or as standalone risk management activities. Whenever you need guidance, our Early Contractor Engagement capabilities will support you in making informed decisions throughout the process.
